How to clean your home fast before guests arrive
Clear the surfaces guests see, clean the guest toilet, wipe the kitchen counters, vacuum the main room and take out the rubbish. A one-hour plan that works.

When guests are on their way and time is short, clean what they will see and use, and nothing else. In one hour you can clear and wipe the living room, make the guest toilet fresh, tidy the kitchen counters, vacuum the main floor, and take out the rubbish. Close the doors to rooms guests will not enter. A home that is tidy, smells fresh and has a clean toilet feels clean, even if the bedrooms are not.
This is a plan for a quick visit: friends dropping by, relatives for dinner, or a viewing. For a big gathering you have days to prepare for, see our guides to cleaning before and after a party and getting your home ready for year-end guests. And if guests come often, a home cleaner on a regular slot keeps the home close to guest-ready all week.
Before you start: two minutes
- Grab a laundry basket or a large bag for clutter.
- Put on music or a timer. It keeps you moving.
- Open the windows in the living room and kitchen, or switch on the fan.
- Decide which doors stay closed, usually the bedrooms and the study.
The one-hour plan
Minutes 0 to 15: clear the clutter
Walk through the entrance, living room and dining area with the basket. Pick up shoes, bags, toys, post, laundry, cups and anything that does not belong. Do not sort it now. Put the basket in a bedroom and close the door; you can deal with it tomorrow.
Clear the coffee table and the dining table completely, then put back only what should be there.
Minutes 15 to 30: the guest toilet
Guests will almost certainly use it, and it is where they notice most.
- Toilet bowl: a squirt of toilet cleaner under the rim, brush it, and flush. Wipe the seat, the lid and the outside of the bowl.
- Basin and tap: wipe them, then dry the tap with a cloth so it shines.
- Mirror: a quick wipe to remove splashes.
- Floor: wipe up any water and hair. A dry floor matters more than a scrubbed one.
- Hand towel and soap: hang a fresh towel and check the soap dispenser.
- Toilet paper: put a full roll on, and a spare where it can be seen.
- Bin: empty it.
Minutes 30 to 40: the kitchen
- Load or wash the dishes, or at least stack them neatly out of sight.
- Wipe the counters and the hob.
- Wipe the sink and empty the strainer.
- Wipe the fridge door handle and anything sticky that guests might touch.
Minutes 40 to 55: the living and dining room
- Dust only what is at eye level: the TV console, the coffee table, the shelves near the sofa.
- Fluff and straighten the cushions.
- Wipe the dining table and chairs if you are eating together.
- Vacuum the main floor area, the entrance and the rug. Skip under the furniture today.
Minutes 55 to 60: the finish
- Take out all the rubbish, including the kitchen bin.
- Check the entrance: shoes lined up, the mat straight, the light on.
- Do a smell check. Open the windows a little longer, or light a candle if you use them.
If you only have fifteen minutes
Do just these, in this order:
- Clutter from the living room into a basket, into a bedroom, door closed.
- Toilet bowl, basin, a fresh hand towel.
- Kitchen counters wiped, dishes stacked out of sight.
- Rubbish out.
Shortcuts that work
- A damp microfibre cloth picks up dust and sticky marks in one pass, faster than a duster and spray.
- Close bedroom doors and the curtains in rooms you are not using.
- Let the daylight in. Open the living room curtains. A bright, airy room feels cleaner than a dim one, even with the same amount of dust.
- Keep a small caddy ready with a cloth, toilet cleaner, a spare hand towel and a roll of bin bags. The next quick clean then starts straight away, with no hunt through the cupboards.
- Fresh air beats air freshener. A cooking smell clears in ten minutes with the windows open and a fan on.
Avoiding the last-minute rush
The fast clean works because the home is in decent shape to begin with. If every visit means a panic, the problem is the week before, not the hour before.
A regular home cleaning visit keeps the bathrooms, kitchen and floors in good order all the time, so the last-minute list shrinks to clutter and the hand towel. If you host often, choose a visit day just before your usual hosting day. For a one-off occasion, such as a birthday or a festival, a one-off clean the day before takes care of everything you would otherwise rush.

Frequently asked questions
What should I clean first before guests come over?
Clear the clutter in the living room first, because a tidy room looks clean straight away. Then clean the guest toilet, since guests will use it. After that, wipe the kitchen counters, vacuum the main floor and take out the rubbish. Close the doors to rooms guests will not enter.
How can I make my house smell fresh quickly?
Take out all the rubbish, including the kitchen bin, and open the windows with a fan running for ten minutes. Clean the toilet bowl and the sink strainer, which are the usual sources of smell. Fresh air works better than air freshener, which only covers a smell for a while.
Can I book a cleaner on short notice before guests arrive?
Sometimes, depending on who is free. Availability changes through the day, so the honest answer is to ask as early as you can. With HomeMaster, Helen shows the real open times when you message her, so you know straight away whether a slot fits before your guests arrive.
